Pre-Training
Sandhurst Thoroughbreds offer starting and pre-training of thoroughbreds for the first 6 – 8 months of the horse’s race career. 'Starting' is the process of educating a horse to accept a saddle and rider and teaching them the fundamentals from handling and stable routines, through to racing to win.
Our pre-training services focus on the starting of yearlings destined to go straight on to racetrack training at the end of the education process.

Layups
Sandhurst Thoroughbreds take in horses as layups; this refers to the process of giving horses a rest from their training regime. Horses will get time off in paddocks and be reintroduced slowly into a training regime until they are sufficiently rejuvenated to return to full work with their trainers. Injury free layups will typically recuperate for 3 months, while the recuperation time for horses with injury may be up to 9 months depending on the recovery time.
Our dedicated stable vet monitors all rehabilitation programmes. We gather data on our layup horses and follow their progress on the return to the track to help improve our rehabilitation programmes based on previous results and injury types.
